You’ve got a business and you’re building a base of loyal customers, but you are looking for a way to engage them – and potential customers – outside of your “brick and mortar” space. One great, inexpensive way to start a conversation attract get new patrons and engage existing ones is to start your very own blog for business.
“But how,” you ask? Here’s three tips to help you get going!
Blog Your Expertise
As a business owner, you are probably pretty proud and passionate about what you do…so why not show it? Starting a blog is not only a great way to not only promote your business, but provides an awesome platform to showcase your expertise with what you do!
A great place to get started is researching what is already being blogged about in your industry. You don’t have to worry, as there are tons of great resources at your fingertips, such as www.technorati.com (it’s basically a search engine devoted to blog and posting topics...) Say you run a clothing boutique, this is a great way to get ideas and to see what else is out there in your industry.

Build a Following
Bottom line: What good is your blog if nobody’s reading it?
Here’s the good news – with social media, there is pretty much a platform for every blogger to get noticed these days. Here are a few good places to get started –
Twitter – First things first, start engaging your customers in the Tweetverse (hint, set up a sign-in sheet at your business that lets your customers include social media info). Also, you can take advantage of trending topics relevant to your blog content or specific post using #hashtags.
Reach out to your Facebook community. Isn’t that what friends are for? You can post links to your blog on either an existing Facebook page of create a new one entirely devoted to your blog and share it with your “Friends.” Chances are, they already share your interests and will want to support you! Also, encourage “Likes” and “Shares” for your page to build additional growth.

One of the greatest truths – and beauties – about starting a blog is that you are never set in stone…it’s all yours to share with your adoring public! That said, it will take some time to find your groove and really start humming. Just remember a couple more things –
Pay attention to what your audience is saying. Having a comments section is great for this (and it creates invaluable conversation threads, but also encourages your readers to engage you directly. Include a contact page or information that will go directly to you, as your readers might feel more comfortable asking you about the blog and not posting to an open forum.
Keep your personal bio updated. With your “About Me” section, it almost goes without question that your business, industry, family, even opinions change over time. Make sure the business or industry your audience is reading about is the one reflected in the bio!
